Description

Sterling Chess Northern Traditional Carved 130mm Chess Pieces

Want a chess set that stands out on any table? These Northern Traditional carved chess pieces have a 130mm king, and both the king and queen have carved faces.

The pieces are double weighted, with thick leather felt on every base. With a 39mm king base, this set suits a board with 50mm squares. Each set is handmade in India.

Choose ebonised boxwood or bud rosewood for the dark side, both with boxwood. Two spare queens are included, but no board or box. See more in our luxury chess pieces collection.

Sterling Chess Northern Traditional carved chess pieces in bud rosewood and boxwood, 130mm king

Key features

  • 130mm king on a 39mm base
  • Carved faces on the king and queen
  • 128mm queen, almost level with the king
  • Tall, collector style set
  • Ebonised boxwood or bud rosewood
  • Boxwood light pieces
  • Double weighted, about 1,140g
  • 34 pieces, including two spare queens

The Northern Traditional carved chess set

What makes this set different is the carving. Instead of a cross and a coronet, the king and queen each have a carved face.

The queen stands at 128mm, almost as tall as the 130mm king, so the two faces sit together as a matched pair.

The rest of the set keeps classic shapes, with a 107mm bishop, a 106mm knight and an 89mm rook, so the board is still easy to read.

The knights are carved by hand, so each one has its own small differences, while the turned pieces match closely across the set. Two spare queens are included, so you're always ready for pawn promotion.

Ebonised or bud rosewood Northern Traditional chess pieces?

Both options share the same design, size and weight. The difference is the timber of the dark pieces, and bud rosewood costs a little more.

Ebonised boxwood is boxwood finished to a deep black, giving a crisp contrast against the pale light pieces. Bud rosewood is a rich, reddish brown timber with lively grain, so no two pieces look quite the same.

Both sides have a semi gloss natural finish, and the full set comes to about 1,140g.

If you'd like a tall luxury set in genuine ebony, compare it with our Noble Bridle Ebony 123mm pieces.

Our expert take

"The carved faces on the king and queen make this set a real talking point. It's tall but fairly light for its height, so it won't feel as heavy as a triple weighted luxury set. For a collector, or anyone who wants a showpiece for the living room, it's a great pick."

Frequently asked questions

What size chess board do I need for 130mm Northern Traditional chess pieces?

A board with 50mm squares is the best match for the 39mm king base. Our Bud Rosewood & Maple 48cm board and Sheesham & Maple 48cm board both have 50mm squares, or see our full chess boards collection.

Where are these chess pieces made?

They're handmade in India, so expect small natural differences in grain from piece to piece.

Is a chess board or storage box included?

No. You get the 34 pieces only. The board and box are sold separately.

Are the Northern Traditional chess pieces weighted?

Yes. They're double weighted, with thick leather felt on every base. The full set weighs about 1,140g.

Which timber should I choose?

Ebonised boxwood gives a classic black and white look. Bud rosewood gives a warmer, reddish brown look and costs a little more.

What makes this a collector edition?

The king and queen have carved faces, which you won't find on a standard Staunton set.

Can I play with these chess pieces?

Yes, as long as your board has 50mm squares. It's a tall set, so it also looks great on display.

Do I get spare queens?

Yes, one in each colour, so you get 34 pieces.

How do I look after these chess pieces?

Wipe them with a soft, dry cloth. Keep them out of direct sunlight and away from heat and water, as the pieces aren't waterproof.
