Want a luxury set with a knight that really stands out? These Pegasus Staunton chess pieces have a 118mm king and a knight inspired by Pegasus, the winged horse of Greek mythology.
Every piece is triple weighted, with thick green felt on the base. With a broad 47mm king base, this set suits a board with 55mm to 60mm squares. Each set is handmade in India.
Choose genuine ebony or bud rosewood for the dark side, both with boxwood. Two spare queens are included, but no board or box. See more in our luxury chess pieces collection.
The knight is the star of this set. It's inspired by Pegasus, the winged horse from Greek mythology.
Its mane is carved to look like folded wings, and its flared nostrils show Pegasus landing after a long flight. There's fine carving around the eyes, nostrils, mane and teeth.
The rest of the set is a classic luxury Staunton, with a 100mm queen and wide 41mm bases under the bishop, knight and rook.
The knights are carved by hand, so each one has its own small differences, while the turned pieces match closely across the set. Two spare queens are included, so you're always ready for pawn promotion.
Both options share the same design, size and weight. The difference is the timber of the dark pieces, and both cost the same.
Genuine ebony is a dense, naturally black timber. Because the colour runs right through the wood, it won't wear through to a lighter shade over time. Bud rosewood is a rich, reddish brown timber with lively grain, so no two pieces look quite the same.
The light pieces are boxwood, a pale, fine-grained timber that gives a crisp contrast against the dark pieces. The full set comes to about 2,000g.
If you'd like another tall luxury set with a story behind the knight, compare it with our Excalibur Ebony 118mm pieces.
"The winged Pegasus knight is one of the most striking in our luxury range, and the triple weighting gives the set real heft. It's a big set, so it needs a large board and won't suit a small table. For a player who wants a luxury set with a knight that gets noticed, it's a great choice."
