Description

Sterling Chess Richard Whitty Antique Ebony 96mm Chess Pieces

Fancy a Victorian Staunton with a carver's name behind it? These Richard Whitty Antique chess pieces reproduce a set credited to the London carver Richard Whitty, with a tall rook and marked kingside pieces.

The pieces are heavily weighted, with thick green felt on every base. With a 96mm king, this set suits a board with 50mm to 55mm squares. Each set is handmade in India.

The dark pieces are genuine ebony and the light pieces are antiqued boxwood. Two spare queens are included, but no board or box. See more historical sets in our reproduction chess pieces collection.

Sterling Chess Richard Whitty chess pieces in genuine ebony and antiqued boxwood, 96mm king

Key features

  • 96mm king on a 42mm base
  • Reproduction of a Richard Whitty design
  • Tall rook, taller than the knight
  • Dot stamp on kingside rook and knight
  • Genuine ebony and antiqued boxwood
  • Heavily weighted, about 1,750g
  • Thick green felt on every base
  • 34 pieces, including two spare queens

The Richard Whitty chess set

Richard Whitty is said to have been a carver at the Jaques factory in London before setting up his own business around 1870. His sets are now prized by collectors and hard to find.

This reproduction has a few details that set it apart. The rook stands 67mm, taller than the 64mm knight, which gives the back rank an unusual shape.

The kingside rook and knight are marked with a small etched dot on both colours, so you can tell which side of the board they started on.

The knights are carved by hand, so each one has its own small differences, while the turned pieces match closely across the set. Two spare queens are included, so you're always ready for pawn promotion.

Knight from the Richard Whitty chess pieces in genuine ebony

Genuine ebony and antiqued boxwood Richard Whitty chess pieces

Genuine ebony is a dense, naturally black timber. Because the colour runs right through the wood, it won't wear through to a lighter shade over time.

The light pieces are antiqued boxwood, which has a warm, aged tone that suits the Victorian look. Each piece is hand polished.

The pieces are heavily weighted, and the full set comes to about 1,750g. That's a lot of weight for a 96mm set, so the pieces sit firmly and feel solid in the hand.

If you like Victorian sets, compare it with our 1849 Staunton Heavy Ebony 95mm pieces, a heavy ebony set of a similar size.

Our expert take

"This is a heavy, beautifully proportioned ebony set with a real collector's story. The rook is taller than the knight, which can take a game or two to get used to. For a player who wants a weighty Victorian Staunton on a standard board, it's a lovely pick."
