Sterling Chess Imperial Sinquefield Cup 2014 96mm Chess Pieces

Want a set inspired by one of the great modern tournaments? These Imperial Sinquefield Cup 2014 chess pieces are based on the pieces used at the 2014 Sinquefield Cup in St. Louis, with a few small changes.

The pieces are weighted, with thick green felt on the bases. With a 96mm king on a broad 45mm base, this set suits a board with 55mm to 60mm squares. Each set is handmade in India.

Choose bud rosewood or ebony for the dark side, both with boxwood. Two spare queens are included, but no board or box. See more historical sets in our reproduction chess pieces collection.

The Sinquefield Cup 2014 chess set

The 2014 Sinquefield Cup was held in St. Louis and brought together six of the world's best players. Fabiano Caruana won it, starting with seven wins in a row.

This set is based on the pieces from that event, with some small changes to the design. It's a classic Staunton shape with broad bases and turned rings on the king, queen, bishop and pawn.

The bases are broad for the height, so the pieces are steady and hard to knock over.

The knights are carved by hand, so each one has its own small differences, while the turned pieces match closely across the set. Two spare queens are included, so you're always ready for pawn promotion.

Bud rosewood or ebony Sinquefield Cup 2014 chess pieces?

Both options share the same design and size. The difference is the timber of the dark pieces.

Bud rosewood is a rich, reddish brown timber with lively grain. Ebony is a dense, very dark timber for a classic black and white look.

The pieces are weighted, and the full set comes to about 1,600g, so they feel solid in the hand. Each piece is buff polished by hand.

If you like modern tournament sets, compare it with our Sinquefield Cup 2017 pieces.

Our expert take

"This is a heavy, well balanced Staunton with broad bases and a proper tournament story behind it. It's a little larger than a standard club set, so it looks best on a board with bigger squares. For a player who follows top-level chess, it's a lovely choice."
