Description

Sterling Chess 1950s Soviet Latvian 106mm Chess Pieces

If you like the look of old Soviet club sets, these Latvian chess pieces are for you. They're a reproduction of a 1950s Latvian design from the Soviet era, made for everyday play rather than a display cabinet.

Soviet chess pieces look quite different from the tall English Staunton sets most people picture. They're shorter and wider, with a solid base under every piece. With a 106mm king, this is a full-size set that suits a standard tournament board with 50mm to 55mm squares. Each set is handmade in India.

You can choose from four finishes, all made to the same pattern. Every set comes with two spare queens, but no board or box, so you can pair them with a board you already own. You'll find more options like these in our wood chess pieces collection.

Soviet Latvian chess pieces in bud rosewood and natural boxwood with a 106mm king

Key features

  • 106mm king with a wide base that keeps it steady
  • Four finishes, all made to the same pattern
  • Knights carved differently on each side
  • 34 pieces, including two spare queens
  • Weighted, with thick green felt bases
  • Neat lathe work on every piece
  • Handmade in India
  • A Soviet look that stands apart from English Staunton

The history of Soviet Latvian chess pieces

Chess was a huge part of life in the Soviet Union, and clubs everywhere needed sets that could take a lot of play. This pattern is a reproduction of chess pieces made in Latvia in the 1950s, during that era. The knights are carved differently on each side, and every piece has neat lathe work, which is a big part of the set's old-school charm.

Originals from the period are hard to find in good playing condition. A reproduction gives you the same Soviet look in pieces you can use every day without worrying about them. If you like the era, you'll also find other Soviet-style chess pieces in our range.

Ebonised and natural boxwood Soviet Latvian chess pieces, 1950s reproduction

Which Soviet Latvian chess piece finish should you choose?

All four finishes are the same size and pattern, so it really comes down to looks. Bud rosewood with natural boxwood gives you a warm, reddish brown dark side. Ebonised with natural boxwood is the classic black and white look, with the strongest contrast.

Ebonised with antiqued boxwood softens the light side to an older, honey tone. Stained crimson with natural boxwood is the boldest of the four, with a red dark side that still shows the wood grain.

If you can't decide, ebonised and natural boxwood is the easiest to play with, because the two sides are the quickest to tell apart at a glance. If the set will sit out on display, the bud rosewood or stained crimson finishes add a bit more colour to the room.

Our expert take

"If you want a chess set with real Soviet character, this is it. They're lighter than a weighted tournament set, so if you like a heavy piece in your hand, look elsewhere. For a club player who loves the Soviet look, they're hard to beat."

Frequently asked questions

What size chess board do I need for 106mm chess pieces?

A board with 50mm to 55mm squares. Our sheesham and maple 48cm board and Player's Choice 53cm board both suit these pieces, or browse the full chess boards collection.

Where are these Soviet Latvian chess pieces made?

They're handmade in India. Each piece is turned and finished by hand, so you may see small natural differences in grain and colour.

Is a chess board or storage box included?

No. You get the 34 pieces only. A board and a storage box are sold separately.

Are these chess pieces weighted?

Yes. They're weighted, with thick green felt on every base. The full set weighs about 1,050g to 1,170g, depending on the finish.

Do the Soviet Latvian chess pieces come with extra queens?

Yes. There are two spare queens, one in each colour, so you have 34 pieces in total.

What's the difference between ebony and ebonised?

Ebony is a naturally black timber. Ebonised pieces are boxwood that has been stained black, which gives you the same look at a lower cost.

How do I look after wooden chess pieces?

Wipe them with a soft, dry cloth and keep them out of direct sun and away from heaters. Avoid water and household cleaners, as they can damage the finish.

Are these a good gift for a chess player?

Yes, especially for someone who loves chess history or the Soviet era. They're a set that looks different from what most players already own.

How do these compare to other Soviet chess pieces?

They're a different pattern and size to our Soviet Era 95mm pieces and our 1961 Soviet Baku 103mm pieces. Pick the one whose shape you like best.

Is shipping free?

Yes. Shipping is free on these chess pieces.
