These sheesham Staunton chess pieces are a compact wooden set for smaller boards. The king is 66mm tall, so they fit tables and boards where a full-size set would feel cramped. It's a lovely set to leave out on a coffee table.
The dark pieces are sheesham, a warm reddish-brown timber, and the light pieces are pale boxwood. With a 66mm king, this is a compact set that suits a board with 40mm to 50mm squares. Each set is handmade in India.
The pieces are polished, weighted and felted, and the set includes two spare queens. No board or box is included, so you can choose a board that suits your space. It's one of the most affordable wooden sets in our Staunton chess pieces collection.
Sheesham is a hardwood from India with a warm, reddish-brown colour. Every piece shows a slightly different grain, so the dark side has more life than a plain black set. Each piece is handmade, so no two sets look exactly the same.
Paired with pale boxwood, it gives a softer, more natural look than black and white. The classic Staunton shapes mean every piece is easy to recognise, even at this smaller size. It's a set that suits a living room or study, where it can stay out on the table between games.
The pieces are weighted, so they feel steadier than you'd expect from a small set, and thick green felt on every base protects the board. At about 500g for the whole set, it's easy to put away or take with you. It's an easy set to live with day to day.
These pieces need a smaller board, with squares of 40mm to 50mm. A standard tournament board with 55mm squares is too big for them. Our Sheesham & Maple 43cm board has 45mm squares and matches the sheesham pieces well. Pairing a sheesham set with a sheesham board gives a nice, matching look, and 45mm squares are a good middle ground for this size.
For a darker look, try our Dark Brown Rosewood & Maple 43cm board, also with 45mm squares. A travel or folding board with squares in the same range also works well. Browse all our options in the chess boards collection.
"Sheesham and boxwood is a classic, warm combination, and it looks great at this size. These are small, light pieces, so they're not the set for you if you want a full-size tournament feel. For a family table or a smaller board, they're excellent value."
