Sterling Chess War Admiral chess pieces in genuine ebony and antiqued boxwood, 112mm king

Key features

  • 112mm king on a 44mm base
  • Finely carved knight
  • Tall 100mm queen
  • Classic luxury Staunton shape
  • Genuine ebony dark pieces
  • Antiqued boxwood light pieces
  • Weighted, about 1,440g
  • 34 pieces, including two spare queens

The War Admiral chess set

The set shares its name with War Admiral, the American racehorse who won the Triple Crown in 1937.

The knight is the highlight, with fine carving around the eyes, nostrils and teeth.

It's a tall, slim Staunton, with a 100mm queen and an 84mm knight on a 38mm base.

The knights are carved by hand, so each one has its own small differences, while the turned pieces match closely across the set. Two spare queens are included, so you're always ready for pawn promotion.

Genuine ebony and antiqued boxwood War Admiral chess pieces

Genuine ebony is a dense, naturally black timber. Because the colour runs right through the wood, it won't wear through to a lighter shade over time.

The light pieces are antiqued boxwood, which has a warm, aged tone for a vintage look.

The pieces are polished by hand for a rich, lasting shine, and the full set comes to about 1,440g.

If you'd like a heavier set inspired by a racehorse, compare it with our Red Rum 112mm pieces.

Our expert take

"Genuine ebony with antiqued boxwood gives this set a lovely vintage look, and the knight carving is excellent. It's lighter than a triple weighted set of this height, so it won't feel as heavy in the hand. For a player who wants a classic luxury look on a 55mm square board, it's a great choice."
