The William Hallett golden dyed chess set

William Hallett was a Victorian chess maker in London, and his name is well known to collectors of antique sets. This larger reproduction is named after him.

It's a classic Victorian Staunton shape, with a broad king and queen on matching 42mm bases and well proportioned officers.

The golden dye is what makes it different. Instead of black against white, the set pairs a honey-gold side with pale boxwood, for a soft, warm contrast.

The knights are carved by hand, so each one has its own small differences, while the turned pieces match closely across the set. Two spare queens are included, so you're always ready for pawn promotion.

Knight from the William Hallett golden dyed chess pieces

Golden dyed and natural boxwood William Hallett chess pieces

Both sides are boxwood, a dense, fine-grained timber. The dark side is dyed a golden colour, and the light side is left natural.

Each piece has an iron stud fitted in its base, so the set is double weighted. The full set comes to about 1,450g, so the pieces feel solid in the hand.

It's a set that looks great on display, especially on a board with lighter squares. The warm tones also suit a timber-filled study or living room.

If you'd like a smaller Hallett design in a darker timber, see our William Hallett bud rosewood 91mm pieces.

Our expert take

"The golden finish makes this a really striking Victorian set, quite unlike the usual black and white. The contrast is softer, so the two sides aren't as quick to tell apart at a glance. For a collector who wants something different on display, it's a lovely choice."
