Every knight in this army leans forward. That single decision is what the pattern is built around, and it changes the way the whole back rank reads.
The horses were drawn from warhorses at a gallop, and they are tilted as though they have already started moving into the game.
Around them the set is a straightforward Staunton, hand turned and carved, with a plain boxwood army standing opposite the dark one.
Two dark timbers are offered, ebony wood or bud rosewood, and the pieces are identical in shape and in weight either way.
Look for it in our staunton chess pieces, in ebony wood or bud rosewood.
The knight is the reason to look at this set. It is tilted forward rather than standing square, so from across the board the horse has a direction, and the rank has movement in it.
That tilt also means no two views of the army are quite the same. Turn a knight a few degrees on its square and the profile changes, which is the sort of thing you notice over a long evening.
Everything else is deliberately plain. King, queen and bishop are drawn to a clean Staunton outline, and that is what leaves the knight room to be the piece that identifies the pattern.
The set weighs 2,040 grams, which is a serious amount of army for its size. Pieces go down heavily and stay where they are put, and a knocked table does not rearrange the position.
These pieces suit boards with squares of 55mm to 65mm, and the upper half of that is the happier fit. At the bottom of the range the back rank is full and tight, and under it the set runs out of room.
The dark side is where the two part company. Ebony wood is dark in the timber itself, so the contrast against boxwood holds up even under weak evening light.
Bud rosewood is the warmer choice, a red brown dark army against pale boxwood, and it gives the gallop of the knight a softer outline to move through.
Nothing else separates them. Both come off the same pattern at the same height and the same weight, and both stand against the same plain boxwood army, so pick the one you would rather look at.
One honest note on the shapes. The pawn is tall for a pawn and comes up close to the rook, so until the set is familiar the two can read alike at a glance from the far side of the board.
Measure the board before ordering. The square window here is generous, which helps, but a board cut for a smaller army will leave these pieces with nowhere to stand.
Looking after them is the same simple job whichever you choose. Keep the set out of direct sunlight and away from heaters, which is what makes hardwood check. Dust with a dry soft cloth, and leave oil, polish and solvents alone.
This set lives or dies on the horse, and the horse is worth it. Tilted forward, it turns a conventional army into one with a point of view, and it is the piece that decides whether this set is the one for you.
The rest of the set knows to stay out of its way. Plain outlines, a lot of weight for the size, and nothing else competing with the horse for attention.
It is not a set that travels. At this weight and height it wants a permanent table, so anyone who needs an army to carry to a club should look at our tournament chess pieces instead.

These fit boards cut from 55mm to 65mm. The wide window makes the set easier to match to a board you already own, and the upper half of the range gives the army a little air.
Yes. Ebony wood and bud rosewood share one pattern, one height, one weight and one square window. Only the colour and the figure of the dark army change.
2,040 grams in total, which is a great deal of weight for an army this size. It is what keeps pieces standing still once they have been placed.
It was drawn from a galloping warhorse, so the head leans forward instead of standing square. It is the piece that gives the set its name, and the one that takes the most hand work.
34 chess pieces. What is in the box is listed in full below.
No. This is a chessmen only listing, so the board is chosen separately and matched to the square size given in the specifications.
