Description

Tournament Staunton German Knight Ebonised 76mm Chess Set with 37cm Board & Pouch

A compact kit built around the German Knight: a knight cut with a straighter neck and the head set low and forward, muzzle angled down toward the board, rather than the reared profile of the English Staunton horse. It became the club standard across Germany and central Europe.

Here it comes at 76mm in ebonised and natural boxwood, with a 37cm timber board of 38mm squares and a leatherette drawstring pouch. Everything needed to play, in something that packs into a bag.

The pieces are weighted with an iron stud in every base and felted, so this is a small set rather than a cheap one. Sits in our Staunton chess pieces range.

German Knight chess set in ebonised and natural boxwood with its 37cm board

Key features

  • 76mm (3.0 inch) king on a 30mm base, matched to the board's 38mm squares
  • German Knight carving, cut low and forward rather than reared
  • Ebonised dark side against a natural boxwood light side
  • 37cm sheesham and boxwood board with 38mm squares, 12mm thick
  • Leatherette drawstring pouch included for the pieces
  • Weighted with an iron stud in every base, 560g across the 34 pieces
  • 34 pieces including two spare queens for effortless pawn promotion
  • Thick green felt on every base for smooth movement and board protection

How this compares to the pieces on their own

The same German Knight pattern is listed separately as pieces only at 77mm, in a choice of sheesham or ebonised. If you already own a board with 40mm to 45mm squares, that is the cheaper way in.

What this listing adds is a matched 37cm board and a pouch, which between them turn a set of pieces into something you can carry to a club or leave in a bag. The board is timber rather than card, 12mm thick, so it lays flat and lasts.

The one difference to be aware of: the pieces-only listing offers both timbers, while this set is ebonised only. If you want the German Knight in sheesham with a board, that combination is not currently available. Other boards sit across our chess boards collection.

What the German Knight changes

The differences are small in millimetres and obvious on a board. The neck is straighter and less arched, the head sits lower and reaches further forward, and the muzzle points down rather than out. Where the Staunton knight looks like it is rearing, the German one looks like it is grazing.

Practically, the lower profile means less of the piece sticks out to be knocked off a crowded board, which is part of why the pattern became a club standard. Aesthetically it gives a calmer back rank, because the knights do not draw the eye the way a high headed carving does.

Ebonised, and what that means

Ebonised means boxwood dyed and finished black rather than genuine ebony heartwood. It gives an even, uniform black with no grain figure, and against natural boxwood it produces a hard, fast reading contrast that suits quick games.

Two things follow. It costs a fraction of genuine ebony, which is why a complete set with a timber board lands where it does. And because the colour sits at the surface, a deep chip will show pale wood underneath and the high points can lighten over many years of handling. A dry cloth and no direct sun is most of the care it needs.

Packing up and taking it out

The pouch is leatherette with a drawstring, sized for the pieces rather than the board. The board travels alongside it. Together the kit is compact enough for a bag without special packing.

Thirty eight millimetre squares are small, so this is a set for casual and travel play rather than long serious games where reading a crowded position matters. The same pattern in a full sized 96mm set with a board is listed separately, and single boards sit across our chess boards collection.

Our expert take

This is a well judged travel kit. You get a genuine club pattern, properly weighted ebonised pieces, a timber board rather than card, and a pouch to put it all in, which is more than most compact sets manage. The German Knight also happens to suit the format: a low, forward head is harder to knock over and easier to pack than a reared Staunton horse. Two honest limits. Thirty eight millimetre squares crowd quickly once a middlegame develops, so this is not the set for a long serious game. And ebonising is a surface treatment, so expect the high points to lighten after years of handling in a way genuine ebony would not. Buy it as the set that lives in a bag, and it does that job better than anything else at the size.

Frequently asked questions

What size is the board?

37cm x 37cm with 38mm squares, 12mm thick, in sheesham and boxwood. It is solid timber rather than card.

Is the dark side genuine ebony?

No. The dark pieces are ebonised boxwood, dyed and finished black. That gives an even black with no grain figure, and it is why a complete set with a timber board sits at this price.

What is a German Knight?

A knight carved with a straighter neck and the head set lower and further forward, muzzle angled down toward the board, rather than the reared profile of the English Staunton horse. It became the club standard in Germany and central Europe.

What is the pouch made of?

Leatherette, with a drawstring closure. It is sized for the pieces; the board travels alongside it.

Can I get this pattern in sheesham with a board?

Not as a set. The pieces are available separately in both sheesham and ebonised at 77mm, and there is a full sized 96mm sheesham set with a board listed on its own.
