Description

Tournament Staunton German Knight Sheesham 96mm Chess Set with Folding Board & Pouch

This is a club kit rather than a display set. Sheesham and boxwood German Knight pieces with a 96mm king, a folding board with algebraic notation printed around the edge, and a leatherette drawstring pouch to carry the lot. It is the combination most players actually use week to week.

Be clear on one thing before ordering: the board is folding card, not timber. It is 3mm thick and weighs 500g, which is exactly why the whole kit packs down and travels. If you want a wooden board, this is not the set to buy, and there are wooden set options across our chess boards collection.

The pieces are the serious part: weighted, felted, and turned in sheesham against boxwood.

Tournament German Knight chess set in sheesham and boxwood with folding board and pouch

Key features

  • 96mm (3.7 inch) king on a 36mm base, on a board with generous 55mm squares
  • German Knight carving, cut low and forward rather than reared
  • Sheesham dark side against boxwood, weighted with an iron stud in every base
  • Folding card board, 48cm across with 55mm squares and algebraic notation
  • Leatherette drawstring pouch included for the pieces
  • 34 pieces including two spare queens for effortless pawn promotion
  • 966g of pieces and a 500g board, so the whole kit is under 1.5kg
  • Thick green felt on every base for smooth movement and board protection

What you get, and what you do not

The pieces here are the same grade as any of our sheesham tournament sets: 966g across 34, iron studded bases, thick green felt, hand polished. Nothing has been cut back on the part you touch.

The board is where the money has not gone, and that is deliberate. Folding card at 3mm and 500g is what tournament organisers use by the hundred, because it lays flat, rolls or folds into a bag, costs little to replace and carries printed notation down the sides. It is not a piece of furniture and does not pretend to be.

If what you want is a set that lives out on a table, buy the pieces on their own from our chess pieces collection and pair them with a timber board. If what you want is something to take to a club on a Tuesday night, this is already the right answer.

Why notation on the board matters

Algebraic notation printed along the edges is standard on tournament boards and genuinely useful if you record your games. It removes the small mental step of counting files and ranks, which matters most in time trouble and when you are writing down a move rather than making one.

It also makes the board much easier to teach on. Pointing at e4 is a different thing when the e and the 4 are printed in front of the person learning. Of the sets we carry with a board included, this is one of the few where the board is notated.

The German Knight

The German Knight is cut with a straighter neck and the head set lower and further forward than the English Staunton horse, with the muzzle angled down toward the board. Where the Staunton knight looks like it is rearing, this one looks like it is grazing.

It became the club standard across Germany and central Europe for a practical reason as much as an aesthetic one: less of the piece sticks out to be knocked off a crowded board. Each knight is carved freehand, so the four in your set will differ slightly in the angle of the head, while everything else is turned against a metal profile and comes out consistent.

Packing up and looking after it

The pouch is leatherette with a drawstring, sized for the pieces rather than the board. The board folds and travels alongside it. Together the kit is under a kilo and a half, which is the whole point.

The pieces are sheesham and will last decades with nothing more than a dry cloth. The card board is a consumable: it will eventually crease along the fold and cost very little to replace when it does. No storage box is included beyond the pouch. Timber boards sit across our chess boards collection.

Our expert take

I recommend this one on honesty rather than luxury. You are buying a proper set of weighted sheesham tournament pieces and getting a folding card board and a pouch thrown in for well under what the pieces plus a timber board would cost separately. For a club player who needs something to carry, that is exactly the right trade. What I would not do is buy it expecting a wooden board, because it is card, 3mm thick, and it will crease along the fold eventually. Judge the board as a tournament consumable and the pieces as the real purchase, and the value is obvious. If the set is going to live on a table at home rather than in a bag, buy the pieces alone and put them on timber.

Frequently asked questions

Is the board made of wood?

No. It is a folding card board, 3mm thick and around 500g, 48cm across with 55mm squares and printed algebraic notation. That is what makes the kit portable. Timber boards are sold separately.

Does the board have notation?

Yes. Algebraic notation is printed along the edges, which is standard on tournament boards and useful for recording games or teaching.

What is a German Knight?

A knight carved with a straighter neck and the head set lower and further forward, muzzle angled down toward the board, rather than the reared profile of the English Staunton horse. It became the club standard in Germany and central Europe.

What is the pouch made of?

Leatherette, with a drawstring closure. It is sized for the pieces; the board folds and travels alongside it.

What size board do these pieces need?

The included board has 55mm squares, which suits the 36mm king base well. If you later pair the pieces with a timber board, 45mm to 50mm squares is the supplier's recommendation.
