This is a pre-Staunton pattern, a reproduction of English chess sets in use around 1700, and the towers are drawn from an old Turkish architectural design.
It looks like nothing else on a table. The king stands 118mm, the queen follows it closely, and the army as a whole is tall, narrow and upright.
The pieces are camel bone rather than timber, and the light army is bleached to an ivory white.
Two colourways are offered, one crimson and white and one black and white, with the same shapes, the same height and the same weight in each.
You will find it among our luxury chess pieces, in either colourway.
The shape is the point. This pattern predates the Staunton design that became the international tournament standard, so the army is built from tall columns rather than the familiar Staunton outline.
The towers take their shape from old Turkish architecture, and the carving through them is fine and delicate. The king and queen carry the most of it, and they carry it a long way up.
Camel bone is light. The complete set weighs 850 grams, and a tall army that weighs this little takes some adjusting to, because pieces lift easily and they tip just as easily.
The set ships the game array exactly and no spare queens. Promote a pawn and you will be standing a captured rook on its head, or borrowing a queen that is already off the board.
These pieces suit boards with squares of 55mm to 65mm, and the lower end is the one to aim for. The feet here are narrow, and on the widest squares the army spreads out and starts to look marooned.
Crimson and white is the unusual one. The dark side is stained a deep red that stays clearly a colour rather than reading as black, and against bleached ivory it looks warm across a room.
Black and white is the plainer choice, stained to a near black, and it gives the sharper separation of the two when the light is poor.
Nothing else divides them. Shapes, height, weight and square window are the same, and the light army is the same bleached ivory in both, so this is a decision about how you want the board to look.
Be honest with yourself about the weight. These pieces are easy to lift and easy to tip, and a tall king on a narrow foot does not forgive a knocked table.
Check the squares before ordering. Measure the board you own against the range in the specifications, because an army this tall on the wrong square looks wrong straight away.
Looking after them is the same simple job whichever you choose. Keep the set out of direct sunlight and away from heaters, which is what makes bone crack. Dust with a dry soft cloth, and leave oil, polish and solvents alone.
The reason to own this one is the silhouette. Tall columns and fine towers give a board a completely different look, and it is the first thing anyone walking past will notice.
Two things are worth knowing before you buy, and neither of them is hidden. The box holds the game array with no spare queen, and the army is light for its height.
So if you want heft under your hand, this is not that set, and our wood chess pieces are the better place to start. If the shape is what you came for, this one earns its table.

32 chess pieces, which does not include a spare queen of either colour. What is in the box is listed in full below.
Squares of 55mm to 65mm, with the tighter end the better fit. The feet are narrow for the height, so a smaller square keeps the army looking settled instead of stranded.
850 grams for the complete set. Camel bone is light, so the pieces lift easily and a knocked table will move them.
No. Both colourways come off one pattern, at one height and one weight, with the same bleached ivory on the light side. Only the colour of the dark army changes.
It is a design from before the Staunton pattern became the international tournament standard. This one reproduces English sets that were popular around 1700, so the pieces are columns and towers.
No. The listing is the chessmen alone, so the board is chosen separately and matched to the square size given in the specifications.
