Description

Chessmasters Series 76cm Chess Table

The Chessmasters Series 76cm Chess Table is the premium chess table in our range. A genuine centrepiece designed for serious chess players who want everything the game needs on one considered surface. Each table is handcrafted from premium Golden Rosewood and Maple, with a substantial 61 x 76cm rectangular tabletop that combines a full tournament-grade 54mm playing surface with wide accessory borders for captured pieces, chess clocks, notation pads, opening books, or a warm drink during long sessions.

Most chess tables give you a playing surface and nothing else. The Chessmasters Series recognises that serious chess is more than 64 squares. It is analysis, notes, reference materials, timing, and considered play, and the space around the board matters as much as the board itself. The wide Golden Rosewood borders on this table give you room to work as well as room to play, transforming the table from a chess board on legs into a genuine chess workspace.

The Golden Rosewood used across the tabletop, borders, drawer front, and hand-turned legs has a warm, honey-brown character with a rich natural grain that develops a deeper patina over time. The Maple inlaid light squares provide clean, high-contrast board readability without harsh brightness. A single deep storage drawer with a green felt lining and ornate brass handle keeps your pieces protected between sessions, and the 26.5" (67cm) table height is designed for extended comfortable seated play.

How the Chessmasters Series compares to the 56cm chess table

Sterling Chess carries two premium chess tables in the Golden Rosewood and Maple construction range.

The 76cm Chessmasters Series (this table) is the premium rectangular chess table. A 61 x 76cm tabletop that combines the playing surface with wide accessory borders on all four sides. The extra table real estate gives you room for a chess clock, captured pieces, a notation pad, an opening book, and a drink without cluttering the playing surface. The single deep drawer is sized for tournament-grade piece storage. Best suited to serious players who use their chess table as a full chess workspace, and to buyers who have the room for a substantial furniture-grade centrepiece.

The Golden Rosewood & Maple 56cm Chess Table is the compact square-format tournament table. A 56 x 56cm playing surface with two smaller storage drawers, in a more focused footprint that suits smaller spaces and buyers who want a dedicated chess table without the workspace-style extras.

Both tables share the same handcrafted Golden Rosewood and Maple construction, solid hardwood build quality, and refined furniture-grade finish. The choice comes down to whether you want a substantial workspace-style chess table (76cm Chessmasters) or a compact focused chess table (56cm).

The playing surface: tournament-grade 54mm squares

The 61 x 76cm rectangular tabletop features an inlaid Golden Rosewood and Maple chess board positioned centrally, with the 54mm squares matching FIDE chess equipment guidelines for pieces with a 36-44mm king base diameter. The pieces sit naturally on each square with comfortable room for movement without touching neighbouring pieces. This is the correct proportional relationship for serious tournament, club, and dedicated home chess play.

The inlaid board construction sets the playing surface flush with the surrounding borders, so there is no raised edge to catch pieces during rapid play, and no separation between the chess board and the surrounding table. The Golden Rosewood and Maple squares are hand-cut and precisely fitted, with clean transitions between light and dark squares that read beautifully at both close range and at seated distance.

Top view of a chess table with alternating dark brown and light beige checkers, set against a plain white background.

Wide accessory borders and a full chess workspace

The defining feature of the Chessmasters Series is the substantial border space around the central chess board. On a standard chess table, the playing surface takes up the entire tabletop and leaves no room for anything else. Chess clocks sit on side tables, captured pieces get piled at the edge of the board, notation pads get balanced on your lap. The Chessmasters Series solves this by giving you the space around the board that serious chess actually needs.

The borders comfortably accommodate a chess clock (analogue or digital), captured pieces neatly arranged by side, a chess notation pad, an opening theory book or endgame reference, a coffee or tea for extended sessions, and any other equipment the game requires. For players who study chess as much as they play it, whether running through openings, working through analysis material, or following published games, the workspace-style borders transform the table from a game surface into a genuine study environment.

Handcrafted Golden Rosewood and Maple construction

The table is handcrafted from two premium hardwoods, each chosen for both aesthetic and functional character.

Golden Rosewood forms the tabletop frame, the wide accessory borders, the dark board squares, the drawer front, and the hand-turned legs. Golden Rosewood is a warm honey-brown to rich amber timber with a distinctive natural grain that catches light beautifully across polished surfaces. It is dense, stable, and durable. A hardwood that develops a deeper, richer patina over years of use rather than showing wear.

Maple forms the light board squares. Maple is the traditional light-square timber for premium chess boards for good reason. It provides clean, high-contrast board readability against dark woods, has a stable grain that resists cupping or warping, and takes finish beautifully to complement the surrounding Golden Rosewood without appearing harsh or clinical.

The two timbers together produce a chess table that reads as premium at a glance and rewards close inspection with genuine craftsmanship detail.

Deep storage drawer with ornate brass handle

The Chessmasters Series includes a single deep storage drawer built into the apron beneath the playing surface. The drawer is lined with green felt to protect chess pieces from surface contact, sized to accommodate a full tournament-grade chess piece set with a 36-44mm king base, and fitted with an ornate antique-style brass pull handle that echoes the classical furniture design language of the table itself.

The single-drawer configuration is intentional. A single deep drawer holds more storage volume than two shallower drawers, accommodating a full 32-piece set plus any accessories the player wants close to hand: a chess clock, notation pad, or reference material. The drawer runs on smooth wooden slides and opens fully for easy piece access.

Hand-turned Golden Rosewood legs with grooved stoppers

The table stands on four hand-turned solid Golden Rosewood legs with grooved stoppers at the floor contact point. The turned leg profile is genuinely refined: subtly ornate without being ostentatious, and unmistakably handcrafted. The grooved stoppers provide additional stability against lateral movement during play, keeping the table planted through even vigorous piece movement or accidental knocks.

The 26.5" (67cm) table height is designed for extended comfortable seated play. Players can sit upright at the table without stooping over the board, and both players enjoy an equal view of the entire playing surface without the perspective distortion that occurs with taller tables. The 18kg total weight gives the table genuine stability. This is not a lightweight piece that shifts with normal use.

Recommended chess pieces

The 54mm playing surface is designed for premium Staunton chess pieces with a 36-44mm king base diameter, typically pieces in the 85-95mm king height range. For a chess table of this quality, we recommend pairing with tournament-grade wooden Staunton pieces or premium hand-carved sets that match the refined character of the Golden Rosewood and Maple construction. Browse the chess pieces collection at Sterling Chess for compatible options at the appropriate tier.

Larger pieces with a base above 44mm may crowd the squares; smaller pieces with a base below 36mm will feel visually loose on the board.

Our expert take

The Chessmasters Series 76cm Chess Table is our premium chess table recommendation for chess players who take the game seriously enough to want a proper chess workspace. The rectangular tabletop with its wide accessory borders is a genuine upgrade over standard chess tables. The space around the board changes how the game is played and studied. The handcrafted Golden Rosewood and Maple construction is solid hardwood throughout with no cost-cutting in the drawer construction, leg turning, or brass hardware, and the 18kg total weight gives the table the kind of substantial presence that a genuine centrepiece deserves. For serious chess players building a dedicated chess space, and for buyers who appreciate proper craftsmanship in furniture-grade timber, this is the definitive premium chess table.

Frequently asked questions

How does the Chessmasters Series compare to the 56cm chess table?

The Golden Rosewood & Maple 56cm Chess Table is the compact square-format alternative with two smaller drawers and a 56 x 56cm playing surface. The Chessmasters Series is the larger rectangular workspace-style table with wide accessory borders (61 x 76cm), a single deep drawer, and room for a chess clock, captured pieces, notation pad, and reference materials on the same surface. Both share the same construction quality. The choice is between a compact focused chess table and a substantial workspace-style chess table.

What chess pieces are compatible with this table?

The 54mm squares are designed for premium Staunton chess pieces with a 36-44mm king base diameter, typically in the 85-95mm king height range. Browse the full chess pieces collection at Sterling Chess for compatible tournament-grade options.

What are the borders for?

The wide accessory borders around the central chess board provide space for the equipment that serious chess requires beyond just the playing surface: a chess clock, captured pieces neatly arranged by side, a chess notation pad, opening theory books or endgame reference materials, and a warm drink for extended sessions. On a standard chess table these items either crowd the playing surface or require a separate side table. The Chessmasters Series solves that problem within the chess table itself.

What timbers are used in the construction?

The tabletop, wide accessory borders, dark board squares, drawer front, and hand-turned legs are made from Golden Rosewood, a warm, honey-brown hardwood with a rich natural grain. The light board squares are made from Maple. Both timbers are solid hardwood throughout with no veneer construction.

How tall is the table?

The playing surface sits at 26.5" (67cm) from the floor, which is designed for comfortable extended seated play at a standard dining or study chair.

Does the table come pre-assembled?

The table ships with the legs detached for safe, damage-free transport. Attaching the legs to the base is straightforward and requires only basic assembly.

How many storage drawers does the table have?

The table has a single deep storage drawer built into the apron beneath the playing surface. The single-drawer configuration is intentional. It accommodates more storage volume than two shallow drawers, holding a full tournament-grade chess set plus accessories.

Are the pieces included?

No. The table is supplied without chess pieces. This allows buyers to pair the table with their preferred piece set from the chess pieces collection.

Does the table require any care or maintenance?

The Golden Rosewood and Maple construction is finished for long-term durability. As with any premium hardwood furniture, we recommend keeping the table out of direct sunlight for extended periods and away from radiators or heating vents that can dry the timber. Occasional dusting with a soft dry cloth is sufficient for regular maintenance. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners.

How stable is the table during play?

The hand-turned Golden Rosewood legs feature grooved stoppers at the floor contact point that resist lateral movement during play. The solid hardwood construction and substantial 18kg weight keep the table firmly in place during normal use.

Where is the table made?

Each Chessmasters Series Chess Table is handcrafted by skilled artisans.
