Description

Golden Rosewood & Maple 56cm Chess Table

The Golden Rosewood & Maple 56cm Chess Table is a serious tournament-grade chess table designed to be the centrepiece of any dedicated chess space. Each table is handcrafted from premium Golden Rosewood and Maple, with a 56 x 56cm playing surface featuring 55mm squares that meet FIDE-aligned tournament proportions for pieces with a 38-46mm king base. The result is a chess table built for real play, real presence, and real longevity.

The Golden Rosewood used across the frame and dark board squares has a warm, honey-brown character with a rich natural grain that develops a deeper patina over time. The Maple light squares provide clean, high-contrast board readability without the harsh brightness of stained or synthetic alternatives. Together, the two timbers produce a chess table that reads immediately as a considered, premium object. It sits comfortably in a study, library, drawing room, or serious games room without needing to justify itself.

Two green-felt-lined storage drawers with vintage-style brass handles keep your pieces organised and protected between sessions. The hand-turned legs and refined proportions place the playing surface at a proper 27" (69cm) height for comfortable seated play. This is not a folding chess board or a converted side table. This is a chess table.

How the 56cm compares to our other chess tables

Sterling Chess carries a curated range of premium chess tables at different scales and configurations.

The 56cm Golden Rosewood & Maple (this table) is the compact, square-format tournament table in our range with a 56 x 56cm playing surface, 55mm squares, two storage drawers, and a 27" table height. It suits players who want a dedicated chess table with a focused footprint that fits comfortably in most home settings.

The 76cm Chessmasters Series is the premium rectangular chess table in our range with a 61 x 76cm rectangular tabletop that includes wide accessory borders for captured pieces, chess clocks, notation pads, and reference materials alongside the playing surface itself. It suits players who want a chess table that doubles as a full chess workspace.

Both tables share the same Golden Rosewood and Maple construction, handcrafted quality, and refined furniture-grade finish. The choice comes down to whether you want a compact focused chess table (56cm) or a substantial workspace-style chess table (76cm).

A chess table built for serious play

Most chess playing surfaces at home are compromises. A folding board on a dining table works but interrupts the meal setting. A chess board resting on a coffee table sits too low for proper seated play. A converted side table lacks the room to move pieces confidently and holds pieces awkwardly during a game. A dedicated chess table solves all of these problems in one considered object.

The Golden Rosewood & Maple 56cm Chess Table is exactly that. A table designed from the first sketch to be a chess table, with the playing surface at the correct height for seated play, the board dimensions matched to proper tournament piece proportions, and integrated storage that keeps pieces safely accessible without cluttering the table itself. The playing surface is inlaid directly into the tabletop, so there is no board to place, no mat to unfold, no setup ritual required. Sit down, arrange the pieces, and play.

For serious chess players who use the same setup regularly, whether for daily practice, club night preparation, long weekend games with friends and family, or solo study work through opening books and engine analysis, a dedicated chess table transforms the experience. The physical act of playing chess becomes cleaner, more focused, and more considered.

Handcrafted Golden Rosewood and Maple construction

The table is handcrafted from two premium hardwoods, each chosen for both aesthetic and functional character.

Golden Rosewood forms the tabletop frame, the dark board squares, the drawer fronts, and the hand-turned legs. Golden Rosewood is a warm honey-brown to rich amber timber with a distinctive natural grain that catches light beautifully across polished surfaces. It is dense, stable, and durable. A hardwood that develops a deeper, richer patina over years of use rather than showing wear. The natural colour variation means no two tables are identical, and each carries its own subtle character within the wider design.

Maple forms the light board squares. Maple is the traditional light-square timber for premium chess boards for good reason. It provides clean, high-contrast board readability against dark woods, has a stable grain that resists cupping or warping, and takes finish beautifully to complement the surrounding Golden Rosewood without appearing harsh or clinical. The pale honey tone of the maple has a natural warmth that pairs particularly well with the deeper golden hues of the rosewood.

The two timbers together produce a chess table that reads as premium at a glance and rewards close inspection with genuine craftsmanship detail.

Storage drawers with green felt lining

The table includes two storage drawers built into the apron beneath the playing surface. Each drawer is lined with green felt to protect chess pieces from surface contact, is fitted with a vintage-style brass handle, and has been sized to accommodate the pieces from a tournament-grade chess set for pieces with 38-46mm king base.

The two-drawer configuration is genuinely practical. One drawer can hold the light pieces, the other the dark, keeping the set organised and immediately ready for the next game. For players with multiple chess sets, one drawer can hold the primary set with the other reserved for a secondary set, chess clock, notation pad, or reference materials. The green felt lining is the same colour used inside quality chess piece storage boxes and premium chess set cases. It is a nod to traditional chess craftsmanship, and a practical layer of protection against surface damage during storage.

Hand-turned legs with grooved stoppers

The table stands on four hand-turned solid Golden Rosewood legs with grooved stoppers at the floor contact point. The turned leg profile follows a classical furniture design language: subtle, refined, and unmistakably handcrafted. The grooved stoppers provide additional stability against lateral movement during play. This matters more than it sounds. A chess table that shifts even slightly under normal use disrupts the placed pieces and breaks concentration. The grooved leg stoppers eliminate that problem entirely.

The 27" (69cm) table height is the correct height for comfortable seated play at a standard dining or study chair. Players can sit upright at the table without stooping over the board, and the pieces are positioned at the natural eye level for confident piece manipulation without shoulder strain during extended sessions.

Recommended chess pieces

The 56 x 56cm playing surface with 55mm squares is designed for chess pieces with a 38mm to 46mm king base diameter. This proportional relationship follows FIDE chess equipment guidelines for tournament play. Pieces sit naturally on each square with comfortable room for movement without touching neighbouring pieces.

Chess pieces that pair well with this table include most premium Staunton chess sets in the 89-95mm king height range. Browse the full chess pieces collection for compatible options. Larger pieces with a base above 46mm will crowd the squares; smaller pieces with a base below 38mm will feel visually loose on the board.

Our expert take

The Golden Rosewood & Maple 56cm Chess Table is the right piece for chess players who take the game seriously enough to want a dedicated setup. The handcrafted Golden Rosewood and Maple construction is genuinely premium: solid hardwood throughout, no veneer, no cost-cutting on the drawer construction or leg turning. The table will happily serve as the centre of a chess space for decades. The 55mm squares are correctly proportioned to tournament-grade pieces, the storage drawers are practical rather than decorative, and the hand-turned legs and grooved stoppers give the table both visual refinement and genuine playing stability. For chess players building a proper dedicated space, this is the considered centrepiece.

How tall is the table?

The playing surface sits at 27" (69cm) from the floor, which is the correct height for comfortable seated play at a standard dining or study chair.
