Description

Dal Rossi Brown PU Leather Bevelled Edge 40cm Chess Board With Storage

The Dal Rossi Brown PU Leather Bevelled Edge 40cm Chess Board With Storage pairs a classic patterned playing surface with a modern leather frame. Brown PU leather wraps the box, a bevelled edge frames the board, and a hinged lid opens onto compartments that hold your chess pieces.

It suits the player who wants a compact chess box that looks at home in a study or living room, with the warmth of brown leather rather than a plain timber edge. It is sold as the board only, ready for the pieces you choose.

It sits in the Dal Rossi range alongside the brand's other 40cm and 50cm boards with storage.

How the brown leather finish compares

The brown version puts a patterned light and dark playing surface, framed by a red-brown border and a decorative rope-style trim, inside a stitched brown PU leather edge. It is a warmer, more traditional look than the monochrome version, and suits timber furniture and classic interiors.

For a sharper, modern look, the black and white PU leather version is the same size. If you need room for larger pieces, the Dal Rossi 50cm walnut finish board has storage too.

Designed by Dal Rossi

Dal Rossi has been creating board games since the 1980s, with Italian designers and skilled artisans working together on its designs. This board blends the brand's traditional and contemporary sides: a classic patterned playing surface set into a brown PU leather chess box.

The brand's focus is classic games done properly, from chess sets and boards to backgammon and checkers, and this board brings the playing surface and the storage box together in one piece.

Storage under a hinged lid

Lift the hinged lid and the compartments sit underneath, divided so each piece has its own space. Everything goes back into the board you play on, so the set stays complete and organised between games.

With the pieces stored inside, the board doubles as a display piece on a coffee table or shelf, with nothing loose to tidy away.

Choosing pieces for a 40cm board

The board measures 40cm (16 inches) across with 40mm squares, and the playing surface carries no notation. A good guide is to choose pieces whose king base takes up no more than 80 percent of the square, which on this board means a king base of 32mm or less.

Pieces in a warm timber tone suit the brown leather and patterned squares well. Browse our chess pieces collection to find a set in that size range.

Our expert take

“The brown leather edge is what sets this board apart: it gives a compact chess box with storage under a hinged lid a warm, classic look that sits well in a study. The caveat is size: at 40cm with 40mm squares it suits smaller pieces, and it is sold as the board only, so budget for a set that fits. It suits players who want a tidy, good-looking home for their pieces.”
