Description

Sterling Chess 1860 Anderssen Drop Jaw Staunton Ebony 115mm Chess Pieces

Fancy an early Staunton with a famous name behind it? These 1860 Anderssen Drop Jaw chess pieces reproduce a mid-Victorian Staunton named after Adolf Anderssen, with the open-mouthed knights that collectors call drop jaw.

The pieces are heavily weighted with lead, with thick green felt on every base. With a 115mm king, this set suits a board with 60mm squares. Each set is handmade in India.

The dark pieces are genuine ebony and the light pieces are antiqued boxwood. Two spare queens are included, but no board or box. See more historical sets in our reproduction chess pieces collection.

  • Genuine ebony dark pieces

The 1860 Anderssen drop jaw chess set

Adolf Anderssen was a German master and one of the strongest players of the 19th century. He won the first international tournament, in London in 1851, and played the famous Immortal Game the same year.

This set reproduces an early Staunton pattern from around 1860 that's named after him. The drop jaw name comes from the knights, which are carved with an open mouth and a lowered jaw.

The kingside rook and knight carry a small crown stamp on both colours, as on early Jaques sets, so you can tell which side of the board they started on.

The knights are carved by hand, so each one has its own expression, while the turned pieces match closely across the set. Two spare queens are included, so you're always ready for pawn promotion.

Genuine ebony and antiqued boxwood Anderssen chess pieces

Genuine ebony is a dense, naturally black timber. Because the colour runs right through the wood, it won't wear through to a lighter shade over time.

The light pieces are antiqued boxwood, which has a warm, aged tone that suits the Victorian look of the set. Each piece is hand polished to a soft shine.

The pieces are heavily weighted with lead, and the full set comes to about 2,000g, so they sit firmly and feel solid in the hand.

If you like early Staunton designs, compare it with our Nathaniel Cooke 1849 Staunton pieces, from the year the Staunton pattern was registered.

Our expert take

"The drop jaw knights give this set real character, and the ebony looks superb. It's a big, heavy set that needs a board with 60mm squares. For a collector who loves early Staunton history, it's a beautiful piece to own."
