  • 101mm king on a 44mm base
  • Reproduction of the 1904 tournament set
  • Ebonised boxwood dark pieces

  • Iron weighted, about 1,200g

  • Black anigre and maple veneer
  • 34 pieces, including two spare queens

The 1904 Cambridge Springs chess set

The Cambridge Springs International Chess Congress was held at the Hotel Rider in Pennsylvania in 1904. The field included world champion Emanuel Lasker, Mikhail Chigorin, Harry Pillsbury and Jackson Showalter.

The young American Frank Marshall won without losing a game, finishing ahead of Lasker.

This set reproduces the classic Staunton design used at the event, with broad bases and a warm, aged finish on every piece.

The knights are carved by hand, so each one has its own small differences, while the turned pieces match closely across the set.

The 60cm anigre and maple chess board

The board is 60cm across with 60mm squares, a good fit for these pieces.

It's a veneer board in black anigre and maple, with a matte finish. It's 13mm thick and weighs about 3.4kg.

At 60cm, you'll want a table close to a metre wide so there's room for captured pieces.

Already have a board? The 1904 Cambridge Springs pieces are also sold on their own, or browse our Staunton chess sets collection.

Our expert take

"This is a handsome tournament Staunton with a great story, and the antique finish gives it real character. The dark pieces are ebonised boxwood rather than ebony, so a deep knock can show lighter wood underneath. For a player who loves chess history, it's a lovely set to own."
