Want a set with a link to one of chess history's great champions? These 1935 Warsaw Capablanca chess pieces recall the simultaneous exhibition José Raúl Capablanca gave in Warsaw in 1935. They pair genuine ebony with natural boxwood for a rich, classic look.
The pieces are weighted, with thick green felt on every base. With a 96mm king, this is a full-size set that suits a board with 55mm squares. Each set is handmade in India.
Two spare queens are included, but no board or box. You'll find more historical sets in our reproduction chess pieces collection.
José Raúl Capablanca was world champion from 1921 to 1927 and is still remembered as one of the most natural players the game has seen. He was famous for his clean, effortless style.
In 1935 he gave a simultaneous exhibition in Warsaw, playing 35 games at once. He won 33 and drew the other two. This set recalls that event.
The design is a tall, elegant Staunton with wide pawns and sturdy rooks. The bases are broad for the height, so the pieces feel steady on the board.
With two spare queens included, it's ready for serious games as well as for display. The knights are carved by hand, so each one has its own small differences, while the turned pieces match closely across the set. It also makes a memorable gift for anyone who admires Capablanca's smooth, natural style of play.
The dark pieces are genuine ebony, a dense and naturally black timber. Because the colour runs right through the wood, it won't wear through to a lighter shade over time.
The light pieces are natural boxwood, which gives a clean, bright contrast against the ebony. Each piece is hand polished to a rich shine.
At about 1,800g for the full set, this is one of the heavier sets in our reproduction range, so the pieces sit firmly and feel substantial in the hand.
If you like sets from the same year, compare it with our 1935 Botvinnik Flohr ebony pieces, a Soviet design in genuine ebony.
"This is a heavy, handsome ebony set with a great champion's name behind it. It's quite a big set for its height, so it looks best on a board with roomy squares. For a player who wants genuine ebony and a bit of history, it's a lovely choice."
- Blake Sterling, CEO & Founder, Sterling Chess
