Sterling Chess 1950 Dubrovnik chess set in burnt and natural boxwood with a 55cm board

Key features

  • 94mm king on a 39mm base
  • Reproduction of the 1950 Dubrovnik design
  • Capped bishops
  • Burnt and natural boxwood
  • Double weighted, about 1,210g
  • 55cm board with 55mm squares
  • Poplar and maple veneer
  • 34 pieces, including two spare queens

The 1950 Dubrovnik chess set

The 9th Chess Olympiad was held in Dubrovnik, then part of Yugoslavia, in 1950. A special set was made for the event, designed by the Serbian sculptor Petar Poček.

Only a small number of the original sets were made, and they were never sold in shops. A later version of the design became closely linked with Bobby Fischer, who favoured it over any other set.

The bishops have a rounded cap instead of a deep cut, and the knight has a look all its own. The dark pieces are burnt boxwood with a glossy lacquer finish.

The knights are carved by hand, so each one has its own small differences, while the turned pieces match closely across the set.

The 55cm poplar and maple chess board

The board is 55cm across with 55mm squares, which suits the 39mm king base.

It's a veneer board with black dyed poplar dark squares and white erable (maple) light squares, in a matte finish. It's 13mm thick and weighs about 3kg.

The clean black and white squares keep the focus on the pieces.

Want a different finish? The 1950 Dubrovnik pieces come in six finishes and are sold on their own, or browse our tournament chess sets collection.

Our expert take

"This is one of the most famous designs in chess, and the capped bishops look just right. It's a mid-size set, so the pieces can look a little small on big tournament squares. For a Fischer fan or anyone who wants a classic with a story, it's an easy pick."
