The American Adios chess set

Adios was an American harness racing horse foaled in 1940. He's remembered as one of the most famous pacers and sires in the sport's history.

This set carries his name, and the knight is the star. It has a strong, upright horse's head with a lot of carved detail.

The rest of the set is a tall, luxury Staunton, with a 95mm queen and broad 45mm bases under the king and queen.

The knights are carved by hand, so each one has its own small differences, while the turned pieces match closely across the set. Two spare queens are included, so you're always ready for pawn promotion.

Carved knight from the American Adios chess pieces

Genuine ebony or bud rosewood American Adios chess pieces?

Both options share the same design and size. The difference is the timber and the finish.

Genuine ebony is a dense, naturally black timber. Because the colour runs right through the wood, it won't wear through to a lighter shade over time. On this option the light pieces are distressed boxwood, for an aged look, and the set weighs about 1,784g.

Bud rosewood is a rich, reddish brown timber with lively grain. It's paired with plain boxwood, and that set is the heavier of the two at about 2,150g.

If you like American designs, compare it with our American Bridle 107mm pieces.

Our expert take

"The Adios knight is a real showpiece, and the triple weighting gives the whole set a lovely solid feel. It's a big set, so you'll need a board with 55mm squares or larger. For a player who wants a statement luxury set, it's a great choice."
