Sterling Chess American Bridle Triple Weighted 107mm Chess Pieces

Want a heavy Staunton with a bit of extra detail? These American Bridle chess pieces have a bridled knight and turned collar rings, on a solid, triple weighted set.

Every base has thick green felt. With a 107mm king, this set suits a board with 55mm to 60mm squares. Each set is handmade in India.

Choose ebony, rosewood or bud rosewood for the dark side, all with boxwood. Two spare queens are included, but no board or box. See more in our Staunton chess pieces collection.

Sterling Chess American Bridle chess pieces in bud rosewood and boxwood, 107mm king

Key features

  • 107mm king on a 43mm base
  • Knight with a carved bridle
  • Turned collar rings
  • Ebony, rosewood or bud rosewood
  • Boxwood light pieces
  • Triple weighted, about 1,730g to 1,790g
  • Thick green felt on every base
  • 34 pieces, including two spare queens

The American Bridle chess set

The bridle is what gives this set its name. Each knight has a carved bridle across its head, which adds a lot of character to the back rank.

The rest of the set is a tall Staunton with turned collar rings on the main pieces. The knight stands 78mm, a touch taller than the bishop.

The bases are broad for the height, so the pieces sit steadily on the board.

The knights are carved by hand, so each one has its own small differences, while the turned pieces match closely across the set. Two spare queens are included, so you're always ready for pawn promotion.

Bridled knight from the American Bridle chess pieces

Ebony, rosewood or bud rosewood American Bridle chess pieces?

All three options share the same design and size. The difference is the timber of the dark pieces.

Ebony is a dense, very dark timber for a classic black and white look. Rosewood is a deep brown, and bud rosewood is a rich, reddish brown with lively grain.

The pieces are triple weighted, and the full set comes to about 1,730g to 1,790g depending on the timber, so they feel solid in the hand.

If you like American designs, compare it with our American Adios 111mm pieces.

Our expert take

"The bridled knight and heavy triple weighting make this a really satisfying set to play with. It's a large set, so it needs a board with 55mm squares or bigger. For a player who wants a weighty Staunton with a bit of flair, it's a great pick."

Frequently asked questions

What size chess board do I need for 107mm American Bridle chess pieces?

Where are these chess pieces made?

They're handmade in India, so expect small natural differences in grain from piece to piece.

No. You get the 34 pieces only. The board and box are sold separately.

Are the American Bridle chess pieces weighted?

Yes. They're triple weighted with thick green felt bases. The set weighs about 1,730g to 1,790g depending on the timber.

What is a bridle knight?

It's a knight with a carved bridle across its head, like the harness on a real horse.
