Key features

  • 104mm king on a broad 47mm base
  • Heavily weighted luxury Staunton
  • Turned collar rings
  • Finely carved knight
  • Genuine ebony dark pieces
  • Antiqued boxwood light pieces
  • About 1,660g for the full set
  • 34 pieces, including two spare queens

The Ancient Indian Warrior chess set

This is a luxury Staunton with wide bases on every piece. The king sits on a 47mm base and even the pawns have 35mm bases, so the set is very steady on the board.

Turned collar rings add detail to the main pieces, and the knight is carved by hand with a strong, proud head.

The pieces are heavily weighted, which gives them a solid feel and a satisfying sound when you set them down.

The knights are carved by hand, so each one has its own small differences, while the turned pieces match closely across the set. Two spare queens are included, so you're always ready for pawn promotion.

Genuine ebony and antiqued boxwood Ancient Indian Warrior chess pieces

Genuine ebony is a dense, naturally black timber. Because the colour runs right through the wood, it won't wear through to a lighter shade over time.

The light pieces are antiqued boxwood, finished to give a warm, aged tone rather than bright white. Both sides are hand polished.

The full set comes to about 1,660g, so the pieces feel weighty in the hand.

If you like ebony sets with collar detail, compare it with our BCC Double Collared ebony pieces.

Our expert take

"The wide bases and heavy weighting make this a really steady ebony set, and the antiqued boxwood looks lovely against the ebony. Those broad bases need a board with 60mm squares, so it won't suit a smaller board. For a player who wants a solid, classic luxury set, it's a great choice."
