The BCC double collared Staunton

The British Chess Company was an English maker founded in the 1890s. It's said to have been one of the main rivals to Jaques of London, and original BCC sets are now rare.

This reproduction is a Staunton with a twist. The main pieces have a double collar, two turned rings below the head instead of one, which gives the set a richer, more detailed look.

The rest of the design is classic Staunton, with a sturdy rook, a well carved knight and broad bases that keep the pieces steady. It's a set that looks just as good on display as it does in a long game.

The knights are carved by hand, so each one has its own small differences, while the turned pieces match closely across the set. Two spare queens are included, so you're always ready for pawn promotion.

Knight from the BCC Staunton Double Collared chess pieces

Genuine ebony and boxwood BCC chess pieces

Genuine ebony is a dense, naturally black timber. Because the colour runs right through the wood, it won't wear through to a lighter shade over time.

The light pieces are boxwood, a pale, fine-grained timber that gives a crisp contrast against the ebony. Both sides are polished to a rich shine.

The pieces are triple weighted, and the full set comes to about 1,710g, so they sit firmly on the board and feel solid in the hand.

If you like English Staunton history, compare it with our B and Co 1860s ebony pieces, an earlier Victorian design.

Our expert take

"The double collars give this ebony Staunton a lovely bit of extra detail. It's a large set, so you'll need a board with 60mm squares to do it justice. For a player who wants a heavy, classic English set with a twist, it's a great choice."
