Love the look of a Victorian Staunton? These B and Co 1860s chess pieces reproduce an English set from the 1860s, with broad bases, a king without a cross and finely cut bishops.
The pieces are hand weighted, with thick green felt on every base. With a 100mm king on a wide 48mm base, this set suits a board with 60mm squares. Each set is handmade in India.
The dark pieces are genuine ebony and the light pieces are antiqued boxwood. Two spare queens are included, but no board or box. See more historical sets in our reproduction chess pieces collection.
This set reproduces an English Staunton from the 1860s, made by a maker known to collectors as B and Co. Original sets in playable condition are very rare.
It's an early take on the Staunton pattern, and it has a few details that set it apart. The king has no cross on top, the bishops have a crisp mitre cut, and the bases are very wide for the height.
Those wide bases make the pieces hard to tip, and they give the set a solid, low look on the board.
The knights are carved by hand, so each one has its own small differences, while the turned pieces match closely across the set. Two spare queens are included, so you're always ready for pawn promotion.
Genuine ebony is a dense, naturally black timber. Because the colour runs right through the wood, it won't wear through to a lighter shade over time.
The light pieces are antiqued boxwood, which has a warm, aged tone that suits the Victorian look of the set. Each piece is hand polished.
The pieces are hand weighted, and the full set comes to about 1,540g, so they feel solid in the hand. Because the weighting is done by hand, the total can vary a little from set to set.
If you like early English Staunton designs, compare it with our Nathaniel Cooke 1849 Staunton pieces, from the year the Staunton pattern was registered.
"This is a handsome Victorian Staunton with wide, steady bases and lovely bishops. The broad bases need a board with 60mm squares, so it's bigger on the table than its height suggests. For a collector who wants an early English set in genuine ebony, it's a great choice."
- Blake Sterling, CEO & Founder, Sterling Chess
A board with 60mm squares is the best match for the wide bases. Our Dark Brown Indian Rosewood & Maple 58cm board and Ebony & Maple Sheesham Border 58cm board both have 60mm squares, or browse the full chess boards collection.
They're handmade in India, so expect small natural differences in grain from piece to piece.

Yes. The dark pieces are genuine ebony, and the light pieces are antiqued boxwood.
It's boxwood finished to look aged, with a warmer tone than bright natural boxwood.
Yes, one in each colour, so you get 34 pieces.
Wipe them with a soft, dry cloth. Keep them out of direct sunlight and away from heat and water, as the pieces aren't waterproof.
