  • Reproduction of an 1860s English set
  • King without a cross finial
  • Mitre cut bishops
  • Genuine ebony and antiqued boxwood

  • 60cm board with 60mm squares
  • Black anigre and maple veneer

The B and Co 1860s chess set

This set reproduces an English Staunton made by B and Company in the 1860s. Original sets in playable condition are very hard to find.

It's an early take on the Staunton pattern, with a few details that set it apart. The king has no cross on top, the bishops have a crisp mitre cut, and the bases are very wide for the height.

The dark pieces are genuine ebony, and the light pieces are antiqued boxwood with a warm, aged tone that suits the Victorian look.

The knights are carved by hand, so each one has its own small differences, while the turned pieces match closely across the set.

The 60cm anigre and maple chess board

The board is 60cm across with 60mm squares, a good fit for these pieces.

It's a veneer board in black anigre and maple, with a matte finish. It's 13mm thick and weighs about 3.4kg.

At 60cm, you'll want a table close to a metre wide so there's room for captured pieces.

Already have a board? The B and Co 1860s pieces are also sold on their own, or browse our luxury chess sets collection.

Our expert take

"This is a handsome Victorian Staunton in genuine ebony, with wide, steady bases and lovely bishops. The board is veneer rather than solid wood, so most of what you're paying for is in the pieces. For a collector who wants an early English set ready to play, it's a great choice."

Frequently asked questions

Where is this chess set made?

The pieces are handmade in India and the board is made in Spain.

Is a storage box included?

No. You get the pieces and the board. A storage box is sold separately.

Is this genuine ebony?

Yes. The dark pieces are genuine ebony, which is black right through the timber, so the colour won't wear through with handling.

Are the pieces weighted?

Yes. They're heavily weighted with thick green felt on the base. The 34 pieces weigh about 1,540g together.

Why doesn't the king have a cross?

That's how the original 1860s B and Co set was made. The plain top is one of the details that sets it apart.

Will the pieces fit the board?

Yes. A 48mm king base on 60mm squares is a comfortable fit for these wide bases.

Do I get spare queens?

Yes, one in each colour, so you get 34 pieces.

Is the board solid wood?

No. It's a veneer board, made in Spain and 13mm thick, with a matte finish.

How do I look after this chess set?

Wipe the pieces and board with a soft, dry cloth. Keep them out of direct sunlight and away from heat and water, as neither is waterproof.
