Description

Sterling Chess Bridle Knight Series 103mm Chess Pieces

Want a solid everyday set with a bit of character? These Bridle Knight Series chess pieces have a tall, bridled knight on a classic, double weighted Staunton.

Each piece has an iron stud in the base and thick green felt underneath. With a 103mm to 106mm king, this set suits a board with 55mm squares. Each set is handmade in India.

Choose Indian rosewood or sheesham for the dark side, both with boxwood. Two spare queens are included, but no board or box. See more in our Staunton chess pieces collection.

Sterling Chess Bridle Knight Series chess pieces in rosewood and boxwood, 106mm king

Key features

  • 103mm to 106mm king
  • Tall knight with a carved bridle
  • Classic Staunton shape
  • Indian rosewood or sheesham
  • Boxwood light pieces
  • Double weighted with iron studs
  • Thick green felt on every base
  • 34 pieces, including two spare queens

The Bridle Knight chess set

The knight is what gives this set its name. It's carved with a bridle across its head, and it stands taller than the bishop, so it's easy to pick out on the board.

The rest of the set is a classic Staunton with clean, clear shapes, which makes it a good set for regular play.

Each piece has an iron stud in its base, so the set is double weighted and sits steadily during a game.

The knights are carved by hand, so each one has its own small differences, while the turned pieces match closely across the set. Two spare queens are included, so you're always ready for pawn promotion.

Bridled knight from the Bridle Knight Series chess pieces

Rosewood or sheesham Bridle Knight chess pieces?

Both options share the same design. The rosewood set is a little larger, with a 106mm king against 103mm in sheesham.

Indian rosewood is a rich, dark brown timber, and that set weighs about 1,554g. Sheesham is a warm brown timber with visible grain, and that set weighs about 1,330g.

The light pieces are boxwood, a pale, fine-grained timber that gives a crisp contrast against either timber.

If you'd like a heavier set with a bridled knight, see our American Bridle 107mm pieces.

Sheesham and boxwood Bridle Knight Series chess pieces

Our expert take

"The bridled knight gives this good value set plenty of character, and the double weighting feels nice and steady. It's not as heavy as a triple weighted luxury set, especially in sheesham. For a club player who wants a classic set with a bit of flair, it's a great choice."

Frequently asked questions

What size chess board do I need for Bridle Knight chess pieces?

A board with 55mm squares is the best match. Our Player's Choice 53cm board and Deluxe Sheesham & Maple 53cm board both have 55mm squares, or browse our full chess boards collection.

Where are these chess pieces made?

They're handmade in India, so expect small natural differences in grain from piece to piece.

Is a chess board or storage box included?

No. You get the 34 pieces only. The board and box are sold separately.

Are the Bridle Knight chess pieces weighted?

Yes. They're double weighted with an iron stud in each base and have thick green felt. The set weighs about 1,554g in rosewood and 1,330g in sheesham.

What is a bridle knight?

It's a knight with a carved bridle across its head, like the harness on a real horse.

Are both options the same size?

Almost. The rosewood set has a 106mm king and the sheesham set a 103mm king.

Which timber should I choose?

Indian rosewood gives a rich, dark brown look and a heavier set. Sheesham gives a warm brown look and a lighter set.

Do I get spare queens?

Yes, one in each colour, so you get 34 pieces.

How do I look after these chess pieces?

Wipe them with a soft, dry cloth. Keep them out of direct sunlight and away from heat and water, as the pieces aren't waterproof.
