Sterling Chess Bridle Luxury 107mm Chess Pieces

Want a big, heavy luxury set? These Bridle Luxury chess pieces have a 107mm king, a carved bridle knight and triple weighting, for a set that feels solid every time you make a move.

Every piece has thick green felt and turned collar rings. With a broad 49mm king base, this set suits a board with 60mm squares. Each set is handmade in India.

Choose genuine ebony or bud rosewood for the dark side, both with boxwood. Two spare queens are included, but no board or box. See more in our luxury chess pieces collection.

Sterling Chess Bridle Luxury chess pieces in genuine ebony and boxwood, 107mm king

Key features

  • 107mm king on a broad 49mm base
  • Carved bridle knight
  • Bishop and knight the same height
  • Turned collar rings
  • Genuine ebony or bud rosewood
  • Boxwood light pieces
  • Triple weighted, about 2,300g
  • 34 pieces, including two spare queens

The Bridle Luxury chess set

This is the 2016 Bridle Series. The knight wears a carved bridle, and it stands at the same 84mm height as the bishop.

That gives the back rank an even, level look, which is unusual for a Staunton style set.

Everything else is generous in size, from the 95mm queen to the wide bases on every piece.

The knights are carved by hand, so each one has its own small differences, while the turned pieces match closely across the set. Two spare queens are included, so you're always ready for pawn promotion.

Genuine ebony or bud rosewood Bridle chess pieces?

Both options share the same design, size and weight. The difference is the timber of the dark pieces.

Genuine ebony is a dense, naturally black timber. Because the colour runs right through the wood, it won't wear through to a lighter shade over time. Bud rosewood is a rich, reddish brown timber with lively grain, so no two pieces look quite the same.

The light pieces are boxwood, and the full set comes to about 2,300g, so it feels heavy and solid in the hand.

If you like a bridle knight, compare it with our American Bridle 107mm pieces.

Our expert take

"This is a big, heavy set with a lovely bridle knight and real presence on the board. The knight and bishop are the same height, which takes a game or two to get used to. For a player who wants a weighty luxury set on a large board, it's a great pick."

Frequently asked questions

What size chess board do I need for 107mm Bridle Luxury chess pieces?

A board with 60mm squares is the best match for the broad bases. Our Dark Brown Indian Rosewood & Maple 58cm board and Ebony & Maple Sheesham Border 58cm board both have 60mm squares, or browse the full chess boards collection.

Where are these chess pieces made?

They're handmade in India, so expect small natural differences in grain from piece to piece.

Is a chess board or storage box included?

No. You get the 34 pieces only. The board and box are sold separately.

Are the Bridle Luxury chess pieces weighted?

Yes. They're triple weighted with thick green felt bases. The full set weighs about 2,300g.

Why are the bishop and knight the same height?

That's part of this design. Both stand at 84mm, which gives the back rank a level look.

Is the ebony genuine?

Yes. The ebony option uses genuine ebony for the dark pieces, with boxwood for the light pieces.

Which timber should I choose?

Genuine ebony gives a classic black and white look. Bud rosewood gives a warmer, reddish brown look. Both cost the same.

Do I get spare queens?

Yes, one in each colour, so you get 34 pieces.

How do I look after these chess pieces?

Wipe them with a soft, dry cloth. Keep them out of direct sunlight and away from heat and water, as the pieces aren't waterproof.
