Sterling Chess California Chrome Staunton chess pieces in genuine ebony and boxwood, 108mm king

Key features

  • 108mm king on a broad 46mm base
  • Named after the racehorse California Chrome
  • Proud, upright carved knight
  • Genuine ebony dark pieces
  • Boxwood light pieces
  • Triple weighted, about 2,100g
  • Thick green felt on every base
  • 34 pieces, including two spare queens

The California Chrome chess set

California Chrome won the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes in 2014, and was named American Horse of the Year in 2014 and 2016.

This set carries his name, and the knight is carved with a high head and an upright neck that looks alert and proud.

The rook is low at 62mm, well below the knight and bishop, which makes it easy to spot and gives the back rank a distinctive shape.

The knights are carved by hand, so each one has its own small differences, while the turned pieces match closely across the set. Two spare queens are included, so you're always ready for pawn promotion.

Upright knight from the California Chrome chess pieces

Genuine ebony and boxwood California Chrome chess pieces

Genuine ebony is a dense, naturally black timber. Because the colour runs right through the wood, it won't wear through to a lighter shade over time.

The light pieces are boxwood, a pale, fine-grained timber that gives a crisp contrast against the ebony.

The pieces are triple weighted, and the full set comes to about 2,100g. That's heavy, so the pieces sit firmly and land with a solid sound.

If you like sets named after famous horses, compare it with our American Adios 111mm pieces.

Our expert take

"This is a really heavy, solid ebony set with a lovely proud knight. The low rook gives the board an unusual look, which some people love and others take time to warm to. For a player who wants weight and genuine ebony in one set, it's a great pick."
