Description

Sterling Chess Derby Knight Weighted 106mm Chess Pieces

Like a Staunton set with a spirited knight? These Derby Knight weighted chess pieces have a 106mm king and a carved horse with a lively, alert head.

Every piece is double weighted with an iron stud and has thick green felt on the base. With a 43mm king base, this set suits a board with 55mm squares. Each set is handmade in India.

Choose sheesham, bud rosewood or ebonised boxwood for the dark side, all with boxwood. Two spare queens are included, but no board or box. See more in our Staunton chess pieces collection.

Key features

  • 106mm king on a 43mm base
  • Carved Derby knight
  • Bishop and knight close in height
  • Three timber options
  • Boxwood light pieces
  • Double weighted with iron studs
  • Hand polished finish
  • 34 pieces, including two spare queens

The Derby Knight chess set

The knight is the star here. It's the work of carvers in Amritsar, and it has a lively, alert head with a flowing mane.

The bishop and knight stand close in height, at 79mm and 77mm, on matching 38mm bases.

The rest of the set is a classic Staunton design with a 106mm king and an 84mm queen.

The knights are carved by hand, so each one has its own small differences, while the turned pieces match closely across the set. Two spare queens are included, so you're always ready for pawn promotion.

Carved Derby knight from the Derby Knight chess pieces

Sheesham, bud rosewood or ebonised Derby Knight chess pieces?

All three options share the same design and size. The difference is the timber of the dark pieces.

Sheesham is an Indian rosewood with a warm brown colour and an open, visible grain. Bud rosewood is a rich, reddish brown timber with lively grain, so no two pieces look quite the same. Ebonised boxwood is boxwood finished to a deep black, giving a crisp contrast against the pale light pieces.

Every piece has an iron stud in its base, and the full set comes to about 1,350g to 1,480g depending on the timber. The pieces are hand polished for a lasting shine.

If you like a carved horse knight at a similar size, compare it with our Bridle Knight 103mm pieces.

Our expert take

"The Derby knight has a lot of life in it, and the set looks great in all three timbers. It's double weighted, so it's not as heavy as a triple weighted luxury set. For a club or home player who wants a carved knight with character, it's a great pick."

Frequently asked questions

What size chess board do I need for 106mm Derby Knight chess pieces?

A board with 55mm squares is the best match. Our Player's Choice 53cm board and Deluxe Sheesham & Maple 53cm board both have 55mm squares, or browse our full chess boards collection.

Where are these chess pieces made?

They're handmade in India, so expect small natural differences in grain from piece to piece.

Is a chess board or storage box included?

No. You get the 34 pieces only. The board and box are sold separately.

Are the Derby Knight chess pieces weighted?

Yes. They're double weighted with an iron stud in each base and thick green felt. The full set weighs about 1,350g to 1,480g, depending on the timber.

Which timber should I choose?

Sheesham is a warm brown, bud rosewood is a rich reddish brown, and ebonised boxwood is a deep black. Bud rosewood costs a little more.

Why does bud rosewood cost more?

It's a more premium timber than sheesham or ebonised boxwood, so it costs more to make.

Is this genuine ebony?

No. The black option is ebonised boxwood, which is boxwood finished to a deep black.

Do I get spare queens?

Yes, one in each colour, so you get 34 pieces.

How do I look after these chess pieces?

Wipe them with a soft, dry cloth. Keep them out of direct sunlight and away from heat and water, as the pieces aren't waterproof.
