Want a tournament set with a French twist? These 90s French Chavet Championship chess pieces reproduce the Chavet tournament design from the early 1990s, with a knight carved from a single piece of wood.
The pieces are weighted, with thick green felt on every base. With a 93mm king, this set suits a board with 50mm to 55mm squares. Each set is handmade in India.
Choose bud rosewood or sheesham for the dark side, both with boxwood. Two spare queens are included, but no board or box. See more in our tournament chess pieces collection.
Chavet was a French chess maker, and this tournament design comes from the early 1990s. A Chavet set is said to have been used at the 1990 World Championship match in Lyon.
It's a clean, practical Staunton shape built for serious play. The king and queen share a 40mm base, and the officers step down evenly, so the board is easy to read.
The knight is turned and carved from a single piece of wood, with no glued joins, which gives it a neat, solid look.
The knights are carved by hand, so each one has its own small differences, while the turned pieces match closely across the set. Two spare queens are included, so you're always ready for pawn promotion.
Both options share the same design and size. The difference is the timber of the dark pieces.
Bud rosewood is a rich, reddish brown timber with lively grain, and that set weighs about 1,250g. Sheesham is a warm brown timber with visible grain, and that set weighs about 1,010g.
The light pieces are boxwood, a pale, fine-grained timber that gives a crisp contrast. The turned pieces are shaped to match closely across the set.
If you like French designs, compare it with our French Lardy 95mm pieces.
"The one-piece knight and clean lines make this a lovely tournament set with a bit of history behind it. It's on the lighter side, especially in sheesham, so it won't feel as heavy as a triple weighted set. For a club player who wants a classic French design, it's a great choice."
- Blake Sterling, CEO & Founder, Sterling Chess
