Key features

  • 109mm king on a 47mm base
  • Version 2.0 Chetak knight
  • Genuine ebony dark pieces
  • Boxwood light pieces
  • Triple weighted, about 2,200g
  • 58cm board with 60mm squares

  • 34 pieces, including two spare queens

The Indian Chetak II chess set

Chetak was the horse of Maharana Pratap, ridden at the Battle of Haldighati in 1576. He's still remembered in Indian folklore, and this set is named in his honour.

This is the second version of the set, with an improved knight. Around it is a large luxury Staunton with a 109mm king and a 96mm queen.

There are collar rings on the pieces, and each one is triple weighted, polished by hand and finished with thick green felt.

The knights are carved by hand, so each one has its own small differences, while the turned pieces match closely across the set.

The 58cm ebony and maple chess board

The board is 58cm across with 60mm squares, a good fit for the 47mm king base.

The dark squares are ebony and the light squares are maple. It's 22mm thick and weighs about 4kg, so it sits firmly on the table.

With ebony pieces on an ebony board, the whole set has a rich, matching look.

Prefer a lighter board? The Indian Chetak II 60cm chess set has the same pieces on a black anigre and maple board, or browse our Staunton chess sets collection.

Our expert take

"The Chetak knight is a lovely piece of carving, and the thick ebony board makes this a set with real presence. It's big and heavy, so it needs a good sized table and isn't one to carry around. If you want a luxury ebony set to keep out on display and play on, it's a great choice."
