Sterling Chess Monarch's Gambit Luxury 111mm Chess Pieces

Want a luxury set with a knight that stands out? These Monarch's Gambit luxury chess pieces have a 111mm king and a tall, carved knight that rises above the bishop.

The pieces are triple weighted, with green felt on the bases. This set suits a board with 60mm squares. Each set is handmade in India.

Choose bud rosewood or genuine ebony for the dark side, both with boxwood. Two spare queens are included, but no board or box. See more in our luxury chess pieces collection.

Sterling Chess Monarch's Gambit luxury chess pieces in bud rosewood and boxwood, 111mm king

Key features

  • 111mm king on a 47mm base
  • Tall 85mm knight
  • Knight stands above the bishop
  • Classic luxury Staunton shape
  • Bud rosewood or genuine ebony
  • Boxwood light pieces
  • Triple weighted, about 1,548g
  • 34 pieces, including two spare queens

The Monarch's Gambit chess set

On most sets the bishop is taller than the knight. Here it's the other way round. The knight stands 85mm and the bishop 81mm.

That puts the carved knight front and centre, where you can see its detail from across the board.

Around it is a luxury Staunton with a 111mm king and a 94mm queen.

The knights are carved by hand, so each one has its own small differences, while the turned pieces match closely across the set. Two spare queens are included, so you're always ready for pawn promotion.

Bud rosewood or genuine ebony Monarch's Gambit chess pieces?

Both options share the same design and size, and both cost the same. The difference is the timber of the dark pieces.

Bud rosewood is a rich, reddish brown timber with lively grain, so no two pieces look quite the same. Genuine ebony is a dense, naturally black timber. Because the colour runs right through the wood, it won't wear through to a lighter shade over time.

The pieces are triple weighted, and the full set comes to about 1,548g, so they feel solid in your hand.

If you'd like another tall luxury set, compare it with our Crown Heritage 111mm pieces.

Genuine ebony and boxwood Monarch's Gambit chess pieces

Our expert take

"The tall knight gives this set real character and makes the carving easy to enjoy. Some players will find the shorter bishop looks a little odd next to it. For a player who wants a luxury set that's a bit different, it's a great choice."

Frequently asked questions

What size chess board do I need for 111mm Monarch's Gambit chess pieces?

A board with 60mm squares is the best match. Our Dark Brown Indian Rosewood & Maple 58cm board and Ebony & Maple Sheesham Border 58cm board both have 60mm squares, or browse the full chess boards collection.

Where are these chess pieces made?

They're handmade in India, so expect small natural differences in grain from piece to piece.

Is a chess board or storage box included?

No. You get the 34 pieces only. The board and box are sold separately.

Are the Monarch's Gambit chess pieces weighted?

Yes. They're triple weighted, with green felt on the bases. The full set weighs about 1,548g.

Why is the knight taller than the bishop?

That's part of this design. It puts the carved knight on show.

Which timber should I choose?

Bud rosewood gives a warmer, reddish brown look. Genuine ebony gives a classic black and white look. Both cost the same.

Is this a tournament set?

It's a large luxury set, bigger than a standard tournament size, so it suits home play and display best.

Do I get spare queens?

Yes, one in each colour, so you get 34 pieces.

How do I look after these chess pieces?

Wipe them with a soft, dry cloth. Keep them out of direct sunlight and away from heat and water, as the pieces aren't waterproof.
