Like a classic English Staunton look? These Old Vintage English Staunton chess pieces have a 98mm king on a wide 45mm base and a traditional carved knight.
The pieces are weighted and polished, with thick green felt on every base. This set suits a board with 55mm squares. Each set is handmade in India.
Choose ebonised boxwood or sheesham for the dark side, both with boxwood. Two spare queens are included, but no board or box. See more in our Staunton chess pieces collection.
This is a traditional Staunton with an old English feel, a 98mm king and a queen of about 84mm to 87mm.
The bases are wide, with 45mm under the king and 38mm under the bishop, knight and rook, so the set stands firm.
The knight is carved in a classic style that suits the vintage look.
The knights are carved by hand, so each one has its own small differences, while the turned pieces match closely across the set. Two spare queens are included, so you're always ready for pawn promotion.
Both options share the same design and cost the same. The difference is the timber of the dark pieces, and a few heights vary slightly between them.
Ebonised boxwood is boxwood finished to a deep black, giving a crisp contrast against the pale light pieces. Sheesham is an Indian rosewood with a warm brown colour and an open, visible grain.
The pieces are weighted, and the full set comes to about 1,400g in sheesham and 1,450g in ebonised boxwood.
If you'd like a slightly smaller tournament set in the same timbers, compare it with our Grandmaster Staunton 95mm pieces.
"This set has a lovely vintage look and a good, solid weight for the price. The wide bases need 55mm squares, so it won't suit a smaller board. For a player who loves a traditional English style, it's a great choice."
- Blake Sterling, CEO & Founder, Sterling Chess
A board with 55mm squares is the best match for the wide bases. Our Player's Choice 53cm board and Deluxe Sheesham & Maple 53cm board both have 55mm squares, or browse our full chess boards collection.
They're handmade in India, so expect small natural differences in grain from piece to piece.
