  • 98mm king on a 42mm base
  • Tournament size Staunton

  • Classic, easy to read shapes
  • Iron weighted, about 1,264g
  • Thick green felt bases

The Pro Tournament Staunton chess set

This is a classic tournament Staunton, with a 98mm king and an 82mm queen.

The pieces have clear, familiar shapes, so they're easy to read across the board in a fast game.

The bishop and knight share a 36mm base and the rook sits on 35mm, so the set stands steady.

The knights are carved by hand, so each one has its own small differences, while the turned pieces match closely across the set. Two spare queens are included, so you're always ready for pawn promotion.

Knight from the Pro Tournament Staunton chess pieces

Ebonised, sheesham or Indian rosewood Pro Tournament chess pieces?

All three options share the same design and size. The difference is the timber of the dark pieces, and the price follows the timber.

Ebonised boxwood is boxwood finished to a deep black, giving a crisp contrast against the pale light pieces. Sheesham is an Indian rosewood with a warm brown colour and an open, visible grain. Indian rosewood is a deep brown timber with a fine, even grain.

Every piece has an iron stud in its base, and the full set comes to about 1,264g.

If you'd like a slightly smaller tournament set, compare it with our Grandmaster Staunton 95mm pieces.

Sheesham and boxwood Pro Tournament Staunton chess pieces

Our expert take

"This is a sturdy, no-fuss tournament set that will stand up to plenty of club games. It's a plain design, so if you want a carved knight with lots of character, look at our luxury range. For a club player or a school, it's a reliable choice."

Frequently asked questions

What size chess board do I need for 98mm Pro Tournament chess pieces?

A board with 55mm squares is the best match. Our Player's Choice 53cm board and Deluxe Sheesham & Maple 53cm board both have 55mm squares, or browse our full chess boards collection.

Where are these chess pieces made?

They're handmade in India, so expect small natural differences in grain from piece to piece.

Is a chess board or storage box included?

No. You get the 34 pieces only. The board and box are sold separately.

Are the Pro Tournament chess pieces weighted?

Yes. Each piece has an iron stud in its base and thick green felt. The full set weighs about 1,264g.

Which timber should I choose?

Ebonised gives a classic black and white look. Sheesham is a warm brown, and Indian rosewood is a deeper brown.

Why do the options cost different amounts?

The price follows the timber. Indian rosewood costs a little more than ebonised or sheesham.

Is this a tournament size set?

Yes. A 98mm king is a full tournament size.

Do I get spare queens?

Yes, one in each colour, so you get 34 pieces.

How do I look after these chess pieces?

Wipe them with a soft, dry cloth. Keep them out of direct sunlight and away from heat and water, as the pieces aren't waterproof.
