Want a luxury set with a proud piece of history behind it? These Sher-E-Punjab chess pieces have a 117mm king and a knight with a sweeping mane, inspired by Maharaja Ranjit Singh, the Lion of Punjab.
Every piece is double weighted, with collar rings and thick green felt on the base. With a broad 49mm king base, this set suits a board with 60mm squares. Each set is handmade in Amritsar, India.
Choose genuine ebony or bud rosewood for the dark side, both with boxwood. Two spare queens are included, but no board or box. See more in our luxury chess pieces collection.
Sher-E-Punjab means Lion of Punjab, the title given to Maharaja Ranjit Singh. He founded the Sikh Empire, which lasted from 1799 to 1849, and he renovated the Golden Temple in Amritsar.
The set is made in Amritsar, and the knight's sweeping mane is a nod to the lion in his title.
The knight stands at 87mm, a touch taller than the 86mm bishop, and every officer sits on a wide 42mm base.
The knights are carved by hand, so each one has its own small differences, while the turned pieces match closely across the set. Two spare queens are included, so you're always ready for pawn promotion.
Both options share the same design, size and weight. The difference is the timber of the dark pieces, and both cost the same.
Genuine ebony is a dense, naturally black timber. Because the colour runs right through the wood, it won't wear through to a lighter shade over time. Bud rosewood is a rich, reddish brown timber with lively grain, so no two pieces look quite the same.
The light pieces are boxwood, a pale, fine-grained timber that gives a crisp contrast against the dark pieces. The full set comes to about 1,750g.
If you like a set with a story from Indian history, compare it with our Indian Chetak II 109mm pieces.
"The sweeping mane on the knight is lovely, and the link to Ranjit Singh gives this set a real story. It's double weighted, so it's lighter in the hand than a triple weighted set of this size. For a player who wants a tall luxury set with Indian heritage, it's a great choice."
