Want a big, heavy Staunton with four timbers to choose from? These Shera Staunton triple weighted chess pieces have a 115mm king on a broad 48mm base.

Every piece is triple weighted, hand polished and has green felt on the base. This set suits a board with 60mm squares. Each set is handmade in India.

Sterling Chess Shera Staunton chess pieces in genuine ebony and boxwood, 115mm king

Key features

  • 115mm king on a broad 48mm base
  • Classic luxury Staunton shape
  • Finely carved knight
  • Four timber choices
  • Triple weighted, about 2,000g
  • Hand polished finish
  • Boxwood light pieces
  • 34 pieces, including two spare queens

The Shera Staunton chess set

This is a tall, classic Staunton, with a 115mm king and a 101mm queen.

The knight is the highlight, with fine carving around the mane and nostrils.

Every officer sits on a wide 40mm to 41mm base, so the set stands firm on the board.

The knights are carved by hand, so each one has its own small differences, while the turned pieces match closely across the set. Two spare queens are included, so you're always ready for pawn promotion.

Knight from the Shera Staunton triple weighted chess pieces

Ebonised, rosewood, ebony or bud rosewood Shera chess pieces?

All four options share the same design and size. The difference is the timber of the dark pieces, and the price follows the timber.

Ebonised boxwood is boxwood finished to a deep black, giving a crisp contrast against the pale light pieces. Indian rosewood is a deep brown timber with a fine, even grain.

Genuine ebony is a dense, naturally black timber. Because the colour runs right through the wood, it won't wear through to a lighter shade over time. Bud rosewood is a rich, reddish brown timber with lively grain, so no two pieces look quite the same.

If you'd like a tall luxury set with a story behind the knight, compare it with our Sher-E-Punjab 117mm pieces.

Our expert take

"Having four timbers in one heavy, tall design makes it easy to pick the look and price that suit you. It's a big set that needs 60mm squares, so it won't suit a smaller board. For a player who wants a weighty luxury Staunton at a range of prices, it's a great choice."

Frequently asked questions

What size chess board do I need for 115mm Shera chess pieces?

A board with 60mm squares is the best match for the broad bases. Our Dark Brown Indian Rosewood & Maple 58cm board and Ebony & Maple Sheesham Border 58cm board both have 60mm squares, or browse the full chess boards collection.

Where are these chess pieces made?

They're handmade in India, so expect small natural differences in grain from piece to piece.

Is a chess board or storage box included?

No. You get the 34 pieces only. The board and box are sold separately.

Are the Shera chess pieces weighted?

Yes. They're triple weighted with green felt on every base. The full set weighs about 2,000g.

Which timber should I choose?

Ebonised gives a classic black and white look for less. Rosewood is a deep brown. Genuine ebony is a natural black, and bud rosewood is a rich reddish brown.

Why do the options cost different amounts?

The price follows the timber. Genuine ebony and bud rosewood cost the most, then rosewood, then ebonised boxwood.

Is the ebony option genuine ebony?

Yes. The ebony option uses genuine ebony. The ebonised option is boxwood finished to a deep black.

Do I get spare queens?

Yes, one in each colour, so you get 34 pieces.

How do I look after these chess pieces?

Wipe them with a soft, dry cloth. Keep them out of direct sunlight and away from heat and water, as the pieces aren't waterproof.
