Want a luxury set with real meaning behind it? These Sikh Empire triple weighted chess pieces have a 116mm king topped with a finial inspired by the Khanda, the symbol of the Sikh faith.
Every piece is triple weighted with lead and has thick green felt on the base. With a broad 48mm king base, this set suits a board with 60mm squares. Each set is handmade by Sikh carvers in Amritsar, India.
Choose genuine ebony with antiqued or natural boxwood, or bud rosewood with natural boxwood. Two spare queens are included, but no board or box. See more in our luxury chess pieces collection.
The king's finial is inspired by the double-edged sword at the centre of the Khanda, the symbol of the Sikh faith.
The set is named after the Sikh Empire, which ruled Punjab from 1799 to 1849, and it's carved by Sikh craftsmen in Amritsar.
It's a tall set throughout, with a 100mm queen, a 92mm bishop and an 84mm knight, all on wide bases.
The knights are carved by hand, so each one has its own small differences, while the turned pieces match closely across the set. Two spare queens are included, so you're always ready for pawn promotion.
All three options share the same design, size and weight. The difference is the timber, and the antiqued boxwood option costs a little more.
Genuine ebony is a dense, naturally black timber. Because the colour runs right through the wood, it won't wear through to a lighter shade over time. Bud rosewood is a rich, reddish brown timber with lively grain, so no two pieces look quite the same.
Antiqued boxwood is boxwood with a warm, aged tone, which gives the ebony set a vintage look. Natural boxwood is pale and fresh. The full set comes to about 2,126g.
If you'd like another luxury set made in Amritsar, compare it with our Sher-E-Punjab 117mm pieces.
"The Khanda finial gives this set real meaning, and the triple weighting makes it feel solid in the hand. It's a tall, heavy set that needs 60mm squares, so it won't suit a smaller board. For a player who wants a luxury set with Sikh heritage, or a meaningful gift, it's a great choice."
- Blake Sterling, CEO & Founder, Sterling Chess
